Once dried, the mixture was mixed with wine and iron salt over a fire to make the final ink. The ink was poured into special bags and hung in the sun. ![]() The water was boiled until it thickened and turned black. Then the bark was pounded from the branches and soaked in water for eight days. One 12th century ink recipe called for hawthorn branches to be cut in the spring and left to dry. Scribes in medieval Europe (about AD 800 to 1500) wrote principally on parchment or vellum. ![]() When first put to paper, this ink is bluish-black. Iron salts, such as ferrous sulfate (made by treating iron with sulfuric acid), were mixed with tannin from gallnuts (they grow on trees) and a thickener. Huntington describes these other historical inks:Ībout 1,600 years ago, a popular ink recipe was created. In ancient Rome, atramentum was used in an article for the Christian Science Monitor, Sharon J. Several Buddhist and Jain sutras in India were compiled in ink. The practice of writing with ink and a sharp pointed needle was common in early South India. Indian documents written in Kharosthi with ink have been unearthed in Chinese Turkestan. The manufacture of India ink was well-established by the Cao Wei Dynasty (220–265 AD). To use the dry mixture, a wet brush would be applied until it reliquified. The traditional Chinese method of making the ink was to grind a mixture of hide glue, carbon black, lampblack, and bone black pigment with a pestle and mortar, then pouring it into a ceramic dish to dry. India ink was first invented in China, though materials were often traded from India, hence the name. The Chinese inkstick is produced with a fish glue, whereas Japanese glue (膠 "nikawa") is from cow or stag. They must be between 50 and 100 years old. The best inks for drawing or painting on paper or silk are produced from the resin of the pine tree. Direct evidence for the earliest Chinese inks, similar to modern inksticks, is around 256 BC in the end of the Warring States period and produced from soot and animal glue. These used plants, animal, and mineral inks based on such materials as graphite that were ground with water and applied with ink brushes. Ĭhinese inks may go back as far as three or maybe four millennia, to the Chinese Neolithic Period. Egyptian red and black inks included iron and ocher as a pigment, in addition to phosphate, sulfate, chloride, and carboxylate ions meanwhile, lead was used as a drier. Ink was used in Ancient Egypt for writing and drawing on papyrus from at least the 26th century BC. The earliest inks from all civilizations are believed to have been made with lampblack, a kind of soot, as this would have been easily collected as a by-product of fire. The knowledge of the inks, their recipes and the techniques for their production comes from archaeological analysis or from written text itself. Many ancient cultures around the world have independently discovered and formulated inks for the purposes of writing and drawing. Several Jain sutras in India were compiled in ink. ![]() Ink, called masi, an admixture of several chemical components, has been used in India since at least the 4th century BC. NOTES ON RESPONSES TO WORKSHEET PROMPTS FOR “THE WIZARD OF OZ” However, before either of them could complete their journey, these inner strengths had to be developed and tested. Dorothy had her strength of character, symbolized by the ruby slippers. Luke had “the Force” which ran strong and deep within him. Both Dorothy and Luke triumph because of the inner force of their characters which they carried with them from the beginning. They both go through many ordeals and eventually gain their reward. Dorothy meets Glinda, her three friends, and later the Wizard. They both find helpful and protective figures. Her journey is to return home, and Luke’s journey is to find his father (although he doesn’t know it at the time). Similarities include: Both Dorothy and Luke are separated from their home and must undertake a journey. Then ask students to compare Dorothy’s efforts to return home to the story Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. One option in lieu of the pre-viewing discussion described above is to have the class, as homework, watch the first Star Wars movie if they are not familiar with it. Upon completing the movie and the post-viewing discussion, students can be asked to respond to the questions in the worksheet, individually or in groups. A full explication of the Hero’s Journey paradigm in the movie can wait until after the film has been shown. If most students have already seen the movie, TWM suggests permitting limited discussion about how the stages of the Journey and the archetypes become manifest in the film. ![]() This will enable students to refer to the worksheet or make notes while watching. USING THE “WIZARD OF OZ” IN THE ELA CLASSROOM In addition, by completing one or more of the suggested assignments, students will employ and perfect the writing skills required by the ELA curriculum. Students will describe the stages and archetypes of the Hero’s Journey in a story in which the heroine attains personal growth while on her quest. By understanding the elements of the Monomyth, students will be better prepared to identify the protagonist, antagonist, conflict, theme, and symbol in fictional stories, whether on film or in books. ![]() Viewing stories involving successful quests in different contexts will expand and deepen students’ understanding of the role of the Hero’s Journey in fiction and in life. The Monomyth is worth studying because it is a basic paradigm of human experience that is frequently used in written stories, drama, and film. Students will have an extra quantum of interest in applying the concept of the Hero’s Journey and performing related ELA assignments with respect to a perennially popular film. In his audio commentary, John Fricke says it was originally the setup to a joke about the changing of the guard. But when he comes back, his mustache hangs down. When the guard goes to see the Wizard, he has a long mustache that curls up. There's a subtler plot hole in the Emerald City. That included a musical sequence where the Witch's Jitterbug bit Dorothy and friends, giving them "the jitters." The producers rightly predicted a long sequence based on a current dance fad would date the movie, so out it went after five whole weeks of rehearsal and shooting. But somehow, one puzzling line stayed in - "I sent along a little insect to take the fight out of them." She did? Well, yes, but only in the rough cut. Poor Margaret Hamilton got hit the worst - her performance was so effective that crying children had to be dragged out of the test screening, so she lost whole pages of child-traumatizing dialogue. ![]() ![]() Arresting gear engines are set to apply varying resistance (weight setting) to the arresting cable based on the type of aircraft landing.Ĭyclic operations refers to the launch and recovery cycle for aircraft in groups or "cycles". Python is one of the most used programming languages in the world and counts with an according community and ecosystem. The first attempt was Expression, a library that lets you use many of F#/Functional patterns with Python. Pythonĭag Brattli strongly believes that F# can make for a better Python and has been working on better integration between the languages for several years now. So if you're using ReactComponent attribute in your project, it won't work yet with Snake Island. But there won't be many JS new features (except for JSX compilation, see below) and compiler plugins do need to be updated. In principle, everything should work the same as we're aiming for no breaking changes. Please see below for specific details about each of the new language targets and how you can try each one.ĭon't update your current Fable JS projects just yet. This is great too and we hope it can also happen in the future for Python, Rust or Dart! Some of them have fully crossed the bridge and become Typescript/JS experts. Although it makes for a good catch-phrase, Fable wasn't born to make F# "the One to rule them all", instead we'll be most happy if Fable can be a bridge for F# developers to explore other worlds beyond. We also believe that, same as it happened with JS, the interaction with other ecosystems and communities is tremendously beneficial for the F# language and developers. ![]() The ultimate goal is to convert F# into a super-powerful DSL you can use to design your programs and algorithms and still have the freedom to choose the platform you want to run your code on. If you've been following us on Twitter you probably know this is the most ambitious Fable release to date, extending the compilation targets for F# beyond JS, to include languages like Python, Rust or Dart. Today we're announcing the alpha release of Snake Island, codename for Fable 4. Hey there everybody!
